MRI and CT: to whom, when, why.
Why was a CT scan prescribed for me, and the same doctor and MRI for a friend of mine in this clinic? Will they miss something?
No, they won't. On the contrary: the doctor chooses the method depending on what is important for him to see.
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) - "sees" the skin, muscle-articular structures; nerves, the brain and its membranes, structures, the consequences of a stroke and other diseases, injuries.
CT (computed tomography) shows fresh injuries, hemorrhages, hernias, inflammations, injuries in the abdomen and chest, tumors, cysts.
☝️ Computed tomography is more often used for rapid diagnosis and treatment control in surgery and traumatology. MRI - for chronic, unclear, oncological processes.
➢ CT is a targeted 3D x-ray. With MRI, a three-dimensional image is obtained using electromagnetic radiation. CT scans on average 15 minutes, and when examining with a contrast agent - up to 20-25 minutes. An MRI can take about 40 minutes.
⛔️ Who should not take these tests?
• MRI is not performed if there are metal plates, prostheses and implants, a pacemaker, an insulin pump in the patient's body.
• For CT, pregnancy may be a limitation.
